I thought a floor drain for a 2nd floor Laundry became a code requirement around 2005. Am I mistaken? This is for California.

Jim,

I am forwarding your question to my California code guy, who will respond here.

Hi Jim,

California uses the California Plumbing Code, which is a modified version of the Uniform Plumbing Code. Currently enforced is the 2019 CPC based on the 2018 UPC.

I can find nothing in the current or the past codes regarding a drain pan for a clothes washing machine. I am surprised because pans are required for water heaters (UPC 507.5) as well as air conditioners (UMC 310.2) when leaking can cause damage.

It might be in the IRC, but I have not found it there so far either. I am going to keep looking, but I am beginning to think this is something that just has been missed.

The only other thing that I can thing of is that either it is in the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions or possibly a local ordinance. You might want to check your local building department to see what they can tell you.

Thanks for the effort Gunnar.
I swear I thought there was a code requiring a floor drain system. I'm seeing it on newer construction but had a 2016 condo without one. I have looked everywhere as well. I know Ive seen it before, just cant recall.
